New York Fashion Week spring-summer 2013: Marlon Gobel
NEW YORK -- The Collection: Marlon Gobel’s spring-summer 2013 menswear collection, titled “The Stars,” was shown at the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center on Saturday, during New York Fashion Week.
The inspiration: Nicholas Humphrey’s writings on “the biological advantage of being awestruck,” a Stanford University study about the psychological benefits of awe and the affect of the Hubble Space Telescope on the human psyche.
Photos: NYFW Week celebrity sightingsThe look: The collection included a range of body-hugging suits in shimmering metallic gold and silver (and one pattern that looked like retro-future computer code); twinkling, gleaming shirts; silver Mylar hoodies and several bomber jackets with a blinged-out space shuttle embroidery over the left breast; and an orange quilted ensemble with white contrast taping that felt equal parts motocross and “Tron.” There was also a grab bag of more earthbound pieces: raw denim jeans, corduroy trousers, plaid shirts, and suits with bold Mid-Century Modern patterns (for the folks back at Mission Control, we presume). Gobel usually closes his runway shows with a women’s look, and this season’s included a thigh-grazing black, orange and gray skirt photo-printed with the fiery blastoff of a space shuttle launch. The scene: Gobel’s runway show was the first of a handful of men’s brands being showcased this season in a small venue adjacent to the Lincoln Center tents that was organized and partially funded by men’s magazine Details. Notable attendees included Paris Hilton and Cameron Silver.
The verdict: Given the celestial inspiration, Gobel’s collection was more grounded than last season’s (crystal-studded Kevlar vests, anyone?) And besides, you’ve got to have a soft spot for a guy who dedicates his spring-summer 2013 collection to the late astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was, as Gobel says in his show notes, “the very first man to step foot on another world and share that feeling of awe with the world!”
