New York Fashion Week spring-summer 2013: Tommy Hilfiger women’s
NEW YORK -- The Tommy Hilfiger spring-summer 2013 women’s runway collection, which was shown Sept. 9 during New York Fashion Week, was staged on a section of the High Line, an elevated freight rail line turned public park.
The inspiration: A nautical journey, the sailing life, and the kind of clothes Jackie O or Lauren Hutton might wear while stepping from deck to dock at some far-flung port of call.

The look: Like the men’s collection, the women’s spring-summer offerings were heavy on the stripes but the earlier emphasis on clubby collegiate sports was replaced here with nautical motifs. The bold, rope-print stripe that appeared in red, navy and mustard yellow on a range of pieces including blazers, tops, wide-leg trousers, dresses and bikinis wasn’t the only pattern, though; there were plenty of cheery dots and zigzag stripes too.
We had to wonder, though, about that leather dress covered in navy, red and white horizontal stripes, which looked warm – and a bit out of place among the flowing skirts, shirts and slouchy menswear-inspired pieces. We’d like to think it was some kind of convertible piece that, when worn into the water, would shrink into a bathing suit.
The scene: A Tommy Hilfiger fashion show is always a safe bet when it comes to a celebrity-studded front row, and the second Hilfiger show in three days (the men’s collection was shown on Sept. 7) found recent Olympic track gold medalists Sanya Richards-Ross and Allyson Felix, actress Hailee Steinfeld and music executive Tommy Mottola.
The verdict: Yipes, stripes part deux.
