Cheesy poultry -- the ‘Fifty Shades of Chicken’ cookbook

It was probably inevitable. But this quickly? Clarkson Potter just published a “Fifty Shades of Grey” parody cookbook titled “Fifty Shades of Chicken,” (written by the pseudonymous FL Fowler rather than EL James). “50 Chicken Recipes Bound to Be Delicious” it promises on the cover.

It’s pretty funny, in a calculatedly cheesy, snickeringly naughty sort of way. The cover photo is of a beautifully bronzed roast chicken resting on its side, carefully trussed. Most of the book is unquotable, including the back cover excerpt, though the attribution should give you a taste of what’s to come (heh-heh): “So begins the initiation of a young free-range chicken at the hands of a mysterious domineering cook.” There are 50 recipes, among them “Dripping Thighs,” “Sticky Fingers” and “Learning to Truss You.” You get the picture.

The amazing thing -- at least to a cookbook geek -- is that Potter was able to turn this around so quickly. At a time when even modest cookbooks take a couple of years to produce, this full-color handsomely designed effort comes out less than a year after the whole “Grey” phenomenon began.
