Watch the animated trailer for Heston Blumenthal’s new book

I don’t usually click on these sorts of things, but when I got a press release for “Historic Heston,” a new book from the Fat Duck’s self-taught three-star Michelin chef Heston Blumenthal, I paid attention.

An animated book trailer? I’ve got to peek.

It’s very well done, by London-based motion graphics studio Pete&Tom. And it turns out, just as I’d hoped, the cookbook collects recipes from his enchanting London restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. They’re all based on historic recipes, but reinterpreted by a technical genius with a touch of poetry.

The video riffles through the pages of the book, stopping occasionally at a recipe for tart of strawberries (c. 1591) or sambocade, the earliest English cheesecake (1390). Quick, there goes his version of meat fruit (1430), a magical mandarin orange that turns out to be faux, its orange skin hiding a luscious paté.

Ah, but is it going to tell me how to make that glorious pineapple turning, turning, turning on a rotisserie spit in the restaurant’s showcase kitchen?
