New York Fashion Week fall 2013: Holmes & Yang

NEW YORK -- Actress Katie Holmes and stylist Jeanne Yang decided to forgo the hubbub of Lincoln Center this season and present their fall-winter 2013 collection in a more intimate setting--a 43rd floor suite at the Palace Hotel with a view of the midtown skyline and Gershwin playing in the background.

They talked through the 15 looks with a handful of journalists at a time.

The look: Elevated American sportswear, an uncomplicated approach to dressing. “The line is more quiet and intentional,” Yang said. “We’re conscious of making high quality pieces you can wear over and over...” “That stay in your closet forever,” added Holmes, who was wearing a charming blue and black plaid shirt dress from the collection.

The inspiration: Katharine Hepburn and the 1940s by way of the 1970s. Men’s wear plaid trousers and Mackintosh coat with black leather-lined collar. A sweater with cutouts over the shoulders, “because the shoulders always look good,” Yang said. A blue and black plaid maxi skirt and peplum top. A red silk maxi skirt with a side tie and camisole with barely there silk cord crisscross straps, a look that could take you anywhere from a play to an elegant luncheon, Holmes pointed out. A black ponte knit dress “with a control top feeling in a comfortable way,” said Holmes. A rose-colored silk, cap sleeve, tie front blouse paired with baggy camel-colored suede pants inspired by one of Yang’s favorite vintage store finds. A navy beaded gown with elbow length sleeves because “we like navy,” Holmes said.

The verdict: Comfortably elegant and no nonsense, like the designers themselves.
