L.A. fashion week: Our turn to flaunt our threads
The end of the women’s ready-to-wear runway shows in Paris means the fashion focus will soon be on the City of Angels and its biannual crazy quilt of style-centric activities.
Most of the events are set to take place during a 12-day run that gets underway Oct. 10 and ends on Oct. 21, with the last day of L.A. Fashion Weekend at Sunset Gower Studios.
And most are for buyers and media only, but there are a few exceptions. The most notable of these this season is a runway show and fundraiser organized by Fashion Business Inc. to be hosted by Melissa Rivers and comedian Brett Walkow on Oct. 16 at downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station.
Dubbed “All Aboard ... L.A.’s Fashion Platform,” the event is to include a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by a runway show at 7:30 p.m. Organizers describe the show as “a nod to 1930s films and the lore of the locomotive.” It is expected to showcase 11 California-based labels, including Unspoken Lingerie, Johnny Was, Living Doll Los Angeles, Sam & Lavi, XCVI, Continuous Line, Liberty Sage, Gelareh Designs, shapewear brand Miraclesuit and menswear line Krammer & Stoudt.
The event also will feature the presentation of the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator Award, an honor that in past years has been bestowed on labels including Petro Zillia, Frankie B. and last year’s honoree Nally and Millie.

Also on the calendar
Kicking off the Los Angeles Fashion Week calendar this season is a two-day event for media and buyers organized by the newly minted Los Angeles Fashion Council. The group’s inaugural hometown event is scheduled to take place Oct. 10 and 11 in the MacArthur Park section of Los Angeles.
According to organizer Kelsi Smith, runway shows will unspool both days from 1 to 7 p.m. and all participating designers also will show their collections in an on-site showroom, which will include accessory designers.
To date, the list of participating labels includes GAIN, Korovilas, ISM Mode, White Sycamore, Shallow Fashion, Kittinhawk, Bijou Van Ness, Pop Molly, the Bohemian Society and Jen Awad.

Project Ethos is combining efforts with the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk for the first time. The result will be a public event on Oct. 11 that includes 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. runway shows featuring emerging designers such as Jose Galeana (Galeana Designs) and Lawren Michele Cappelletti (Lawren Michele). Capping off the evening — pun intended — will be an 11:30 p.m. show featuring the latest from the Goorin Brothers hat line.

Concept Los Angeles, which has staged its runway shows and presentations at Ace Gallery Los Angeles on Wilshire Boulevard for several seasons, is relocating to Siren Studios in Hollywood for a single day of invitation-only fashion presentations (starting at noon) and runway shows (starting at 1 p.m.) on Oct. 13.The roster has yet to be announced.

Style Fashion Week L.A. returns to the
Vibiana downtown Oct. 15-19. According to organizers, this season will include more than 30 runway shows by brands from near
(L.A. labels Madison Park Collective and Local Socialite) and far (including Alexia Monsanto from the Philippines and Furne One from Dubai) as well as the GenArt “Fresh Faces in Fashion” show Oct. 17. (Invitees only.)

L.A. Fashion Weekend will return to Sunset Gower Studios for a three-day run Oct. 19-21, and although the designer lineup has yet
to be announced, organizers expect to present at least three multi-brand runway shows, one dedicated to swimwear labels,
a second to emerging designers and a
third showcasing women’s contemporary brands.
These will be open to invitees only.
But one part of the L.A. Fashion Weekend lineup that is open to the general public is
the second annual charity runway event benefiting the Public Counsel law center that
is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Oct. 21.
