‘The Science of Sushi,’ Coolhaus party with endless ice cream, Artisanal LA
Architecturally themed ice cream sandwich shop Coolhaus is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a party at the Unique Space downtown on May 2. There will be an open cocktail bar, a live show by L.A.’s own De Lux, a DJ set by Paul Tao of IAMSOUND Records, Pizzanista! pizza, Free Range LA fried chicken, Golden Road craft beer on tap and floats with Coolhaus ice cream, Ludlows Cocktail Co. gourmet jelly shots and endless Coolhaus ice cream and ice cream sandwiches (featuring seasonal and boozy flavors). Attendees also will recieve a pre-ordered copy of the coming Coolhaus cookbook plus a goodies-filled tote. 8 p.m. to midnight. The cost of the ticket is $65, available for purchase at Eventbrite. Artisanal LA -- an indie showcase of 200-plus artisans, crafters, brewers, chefs and more for shopping, workshops, demos and panels -- takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the LA Mart downtown. More than 40 chefs will lead demos, panels and book signings. There will be Sow Swell’s pop-up urban farm, Skylight Books’ pop-up book shop and a spirits tasting with L.A.’s Greenbar Distillery, along with lots of local craft beer, artist installations and a cafe and lounge area. Vendors include Bloom Honey, Courtesan Cupcakes, the Fancy Boyz, Good Eggs, Quenelle, Redbread and dozens more. Among the workshops are “Edible Weeds & Foraging,” “Bugs Today, Bugs Tomorrow” and “Art of Cake Decorating.” Pre-sale tickets are $12, and tickets at the door are $15 (cash only and capacity allowing). 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are online at Eventbrite. UCLA’s latest “Science and Food” lecture series starts with “The Science of Sushi” on Wednesday, featuring author Ole Mouritsen and Los Angeles sushi chef Morihiro Onodera. Mouritsen, a professor of molecular biophysics at the University of Southern Denmark, has written “Sushi: Food for the Eye, the Body and the Soul,” “Life: As a Matter of Fat,” “Seaweeds: Edible, Available and Sustainable” and “Umami: Unlocking the Secrets of the Fifth Taste.” He will discuss the science underlying sashimi, nori, sushi rice, umami and more. Onodera, the founder of Mori Sushi in West L.A., will share his approach to sushi and talk about his partnership with a rice farm in Uruguay. 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($5 for students), available at www.scienceandfood.org.
