Coffee has gone corporate: A look at who owns what in the coffee world

With Peet’s Coffee & Tea’s announcement that it will purchase Keurig Green Mountain Inc., and the recent acquisition of Handsome Coffee Roasters by Blue Bottle Coffee, it’s safe to say the coffee world — even the artisanal coffee world — is going corporate.

Here’s a look at who owns what when it comes to your morning cup of joe:

Seattle-based Starbucks owns Seattle’s Best Coffee and Tazo Tea (tea), Teavana (tea) and Evolution Fresh (juice). Starbucks also has a deal to sell Torrefazione Italia coffee in its stores and online. As of June 28, 2015, there were 22,519 Starbucks stores worldwide.

Peet’s Coffee & Tea, based in Emeryville, Calif., has announced it will buy Keurig Green Mountain Inc., the makers of the single-serve coffee pods and coffee makers, for $13.9 billion. Brands under Keurig Green Mountain include Timothy’s World Coffee, Tully’s Coffee, Van Houtte and Diedrich Coffee. Keurig Green Mountain owns the U.S. wholesale rights to Tully’s Coffee, and Global Baristas LLC owns Tully’s worldwide retail rights and wholesale rights outside of the U.S.

Peet’s Coffee & Tea also recently purchased Stumptown Coffee Roasters, based in Portland, Ore. There are 236 Peet’s locations nationwide and 10 Stumptown Coffee Roasters spots. Peet’s is owned by German conglomerate Joh. A. Benckiser, which also owns Labelux, a luxury goods company that owns Jimmy Choo and Bally. The company also recently bought a majority stake in Intelligentsia.

Oakland-based Blue Bottle Coffee owns L.A.-based Handsome Coffee Roasters and the coffee subscription service Tonx. There are currently 22 Blue Bottle Coffee locations.

Retail Food Group, a company based in Australia, owns Gloria Jean’s Coffee and The Coffee Guy (a mobile coffee van franchise). There are 52 Gloria Jean’s Coffee locations in the U.S. and the company says it has more than 400 locations in Australia.

The Dunkin’ Donuts coffee you find in the store is made by the J.M. Smucker Company, which also owns Smucker’s jam, Folger’s coffee, Cafe Bustelo cafe espresso molido, Kava coffee, Millstone coffee and Medaglia D’oro espresso coffee.

Costa Coffee, one of the largest coffee chains in the world (with more than 3,000 locations) and the largest in the UK, is owned by Whitbread, the UK’s largest hotel, restaurant and coffee shop operator.

Tim Hortons, the popular Canadian coffee chain, is owned by Restaurant Brands International, the same company that owns Burger King. There are more than 4,000 Tim Hortons locations worldwide.

Intelligentsia Coffee Inc., a coffee-bar chain with locations in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, is looking for a buyer.

Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of Chobani, now has a stake in La Colombe Coffee Roasters, a chain of coffee shops on the East Coast with 12 locations.

San Francisco coffee shop chain Philz Coffee just secured a $15-million investment to expand. Among its investors: Snoop Dogg. Philz currently has 23 shops in the Bay Area and two in Los Angeles.
