The Capitol Records Building and more L.A. landmarks in the form of cake

Baker Sara Heslington of Heslington Cakes in Corona del Mar estimates that she spent 120 hours creating a cake that represents the Chinese garden at Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena. Good thing she loves making sugar flowers.

Her cake and several others that were made to resemble Los Angeles landmarks such as the Capitol Records Building and La Brea Tar Pits were created for a gala for Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. They were transported to Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills where they will be on display Friday through Sunday.

The Capitol Records building was created by Duff Goldman’s Charm City Cakes West in West Hollywood. Chris Burden’s installation “Urban Light,” with 202 street lamps, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was replicated by A Wish & A Whisk in Costa Mesa. Montage Laguna created Barbie’s Malibu beach house.

There’s Heslington Cakes’ Huntington Gardens. And a chocolate model of the woolly mammoths from the La Brea Tar Pits created by the Butter End in Santa Monica, depicting the tableau of the mother mammoth who is fatally trapped in the tar while her mate and baby helplessly watch -- in modeling chocolate.

The “cakes” are actually foam models covered with frosting and/or chocolate, so they aren’t entirely edible. But eye candy for sure.
