Oreo snack hacks by Michael Voltaggio, Roy Choi and Nguyen Tran

Oreo tortilla chips, anyone? Oreo tapped three L.A. chefs for its #OreoSnackHack campaign, asking them to experiment with the classic chocolate sandwich cookie and create new snacks. Michael Voltaggio of Ink, Roy Choi of the Kogi empire and Nguyen Tran of Starry Kitchen each created his own four-step easy snack hack.

“They asked us to hack the Oreo in simple ways, in four steps that anyone can make at home,” Starry Kitchen’s Tran said. “It was actually really hard.”

A series of videos show how to make Choi’s Oreo-crusted chicken tenders, Voltaggio’s Oreo tortilla chips and lemon Oreo shandy and Tran’s Oreo-and-cherry-soda bread pudding.

“There will always be the classic way to enjoy Oreo, but finding new ways to experiment with the cookie” is fun, said Kristin Hajinlian, Oreo brand manager at Mondelez International. “Snack Hacks combines the cleverness of hacking with the creativity that is happening in food culture. We hope it will inspire others to create with Oreo.”

Tran said he soaked Oreos in black cherry soda, placed the Oreos in a bowl, mixed them into a paste, added crushed salted peanuts and broken pieces of pound cake for “a rudimentary bread pudding that you can wash down with the black cherry soda.

“I came up with ideas for 2 weeks. I have a diagram that I drew of all kinds of crazy combinations. Like fish sauce. Fish sauce and Oreos. People would go crazy for that.”

Michael Voltaggio’s Oreo tortilla chips

30 Oreo cookies
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup powdered sugar, for garnish

Heat the oven to 325 degrees.

Blend the cookies, flour and water in a food processor until a ball of dough is formed.

Divide the ball of dough into 2 pieces. Roll each ball until paper-thin between 2 sheets of parchment paper.

Place it on a cookie sheet. Remove the top piece of parchment paper and score the dough into chip-size pieces using a pizza cutter. Bake in the oven for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove from the open and break apart. Garnish with powdered sugar.
