You can get a $40,000 bottle of Cognac at the Peninsula Beverly Hills

If you’re spending $40,000, chances are it’s on a car or a down payment on a condo. But if you’re at the Club Bar at the Peninsula Beverly Hills, you could be buying a very expensive bottle of Cognac.

The hotel has just launched a new “remarkable spirits menu” that includes a $40,000 bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 (the number is a reference to its 42.6% alcohol content), as well as bottles of Louis XIII Black Pearl Limited Edition and classic Louis XIII (which don’t cost 40 grand).

The hotel claims that it’s the only place in the U.S. where you can purchase all three together. The Four Seasons at Beverly Hills reported having a single bottle of the Remy Martin Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 last summer.

If you can’t quite afford the entire bottle, which is kept under lock and key, you can order a half-ounce pour of the Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 for $800. The Cognac will be presented on a cart with a special scale for weighing the pours, and the person pouring will be wearing white gloves.

If you’re on a budget, the Louis XIII Black Pearl Edition is $630 for a half-ounce pour. And in case you’re wondering, none of the bottles come with a pony or your own private butler.

So why is this Cognac so expensive? All Remy Martin is made with grapes from the Grande Champagne vineyards in the Cognac region of France. The brandies are blended and aged in oak barrels, some of them dating back centuries, to make Remy Martin’s famous Cognac. The neck of the Rare Cask bottle is enveloped in 22-carat rose gold and engraved on each side.

And the Black Pearl has been hidden in the Grollet family estate, the family home of Remy Martin’s descendant Madame Heriard-Dubreuil, since 1960.

If you finish a couple pours of the Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 and you’re just dying to spend more money on alcohol, you can pop over to Vaucluse on Sunset Boulevard. There you can order a $10,000 martini, and it comes with a diamond.
