Little Fatty (that’s the name!) in Mar Vista offers kung pao chicken with craft cocktails next door

In this week’s restaurant news, the ever-expanding neighborhood of Koreatown welcomes a new addition, and Mar Vista gets a new Taiwanese restaurant with cocktails.

Kung pao and cocktails: A new restaurant called Little Fatty (seriously, that’s the name) has opened in Mar Vista. It has taken over the space previously occupied by chef-owner David Kuo’s former restaurant Status Kuo. And its logo? An illustration of a cute pig eating out of a take-out container with chopsticks. This is Kuo’s version of a Taiwanese soul food restaurant. On the menu: his renditions of walnut shrimp, kung pao chicken — he’s even got beef and broccoli. To drink, there’s a cocktail bar next door called Accomplice, run by Aaron Siak (from Proprietors LLC). Expect a punch bowl. The bar has its own menu, but you can also grab takeout from Little Fatty. K-Town fancy: Sixth Avenue, the restaurant group behind Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong and Quarters — two Korean barbecue joints with the longest wait times in Koreatown — has opened Terra Cotta. The restaurant is named after the blue-green terracotta exterior of the Pellissier Building, where it’s located, at the corner of Western Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. And it isn’t Korean barbecue. Instead, chef Danny Ye, formerly of Nobu in New York City, is preparing a global menu that includes Latin American, Korean and Japanese flavors. Designed by Sean Knibb, the restaurant features chandeliers and 20-foot-high ceilings. 3760 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, (213) 365-1077, terracottala.com.

Doughnuts by the beach: Blue Star Donuts, the Portland, Ore.-originated company that opened its first L.A. location in Venice last year, is scheduled to open a shop in Manhattan Beach in December. Good thing, as the one in Venice often has a line wrapped around the entrance. And everyone keeps talking about the blueberry bourbon basil doughnuts. When the Manhattan Beach location opens (exact date to be announced), the shop promises to give out free doughnuts until they run out. 451 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach, www.bluestardonuts.com.

Mall eats: Del Amo Fashion Center is about to get a new seasonal small plates restaurant with craft cocktails. Brio Coastal Bar & Kitchen is scheduled to open there in December. Chefs Brian Harvey and Alison Peters will be serving brown butter gnocchi, scallops with roasted butternut squash and grilled salmon with kale. And to drink: moonshines infused in-house, more than 30 wines and local craft beers. 3525 W. Carson St., Torrance, www.briocoastal.com.

South Florida ice cream: Sloan’s Ice Cream, which is known for its sweet wares and colorful decor, will open a location at the Gallery on the Third Street Promenade next year. The Santa Monica shop will feature ice cream, baked goods, plush toys and neon pink and green walls (told you it was colorful). www.sloansicecream.com.

Still hungry? BLVD 16 at the Hotel Palomar Los Angeles in Beverly Hills has closed and will be replaced next year with a new restaurant focusing on elevated American comfort food. The Toscana Restaurant Group’s Beverly Hills restaurant Nerano is now open. Salt & Straw ice cream will open a location in West Hollywood next year. For the next three Saturdays, Jeni’s Ice Cream Truck will be parked outside Mr. Holmes Bakehouse in Highland Park for featured flavors meant to pair with the bakery’s pastries. Joan’s on Third has released two new private label wines, available for retail at both the West Third Street and Studio City locations.
