9-liter bottle of Williams Selyem Pinot goes for $205,000

A 9-liter bottle of Williams Selyem Pinot Noir, specifically the 2010 Williams Selyem Westside Road Neighbors Pinot Noir, won the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Reserve Grand Champion and Best of Show award. That bottle is called a Salmanazar and holds the equivalent of 12 bottles of wine.

Having achieved the prize, the giant bottle was then promptly auctioned off at a wine dinner on Saturday in Houston, where it fetched — $205,000! That’s an impressive price for a current vintage certainly.

Let me do the math. A nine liter bottle holds 304.8 ounces. If you poured it out by the 6-ounce glass, that would be about 50 glasses of wine, which means you’d be paying $4,100 per glass. Is that right? Yep. $4,100 x 50 = $205,000.

Jaw-dropping.
