Celebrity homes: John Mayer sells Pacific Palisades home
Singer-songwriter John Mayer has sold his Pacific Palisades wonderland for slightly less than $1.3 million.
The gated, two-story contemporary has an atrium entry and a great room with a media area. Floor-to-ceiling windows flank the fireplace in the living room. Four bedrooms and 23/4 bathrooms lie in 3,648 square feet.
The pop-rock-blues musician won the first of his seven Grammys in 2003 for “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” “Battle Studies,” his fourth studio album, is a nominee in several Grammy categories this year. Among his hits are “Waiting on the World to Change,” “No Such Thing” and “Why Georgia.”
Mayer, 33, is an avid watch and sneaker collector. He paid $1.75 million for the house in 2006.
Wayne Saks and Christopher Cain of Coldwell Banker, Beverly Hills East, had the listing. Max Nelson of Deasy/Penner & Partners, Beverly Hills, represented himself in the purchase.
Tiring of his role as a landlord?
Actor Frankie Muniz has put his Hollywood Hills-area house on the market for $3,195,000.
The gated home, built in 1941, has been remodeled with an open floor plan. The kitchen, dining room, living room, family room and two bedrooms occupy the lower level. Upstairs, the master bedroom suite has a sitting area, a fireplace and dual closets. Two additional bedrooms are on the upper level of the 4,200-square-foot home, which has four bathrooms.
Muniz, 25, was nominated for an Emmy for his work in the title role of “Malcolm in the Middle,” (2000-2006). He now divides his time between acting, racecar driving and drumming for the pop-rock band You Hang Up out of Phoenix.
He bought the house in 2006 for $3,499,000 and has been leasing it out in recent years.
Justin Mandile and Mary Swanson of Sotheby’s International Realty, Beverly Hills, are the listing agents.
Giant super-sizes his new condo
Commercial real estate icon John C. Cushman III and his wife, Jeanine, have purchased two penthouse condos in Pasadena and combined them into a single unit with 360-degree views.
The enlarged penthouse has 4,357 square feet of living space on two levels. Originally, the two units were each configured with two bedrooms, 21/2 bathrooms and a loft, but the combined floor plan has been customized to five bedrooms, four bathrooms and an office. A wraparound terrace has about an additional 3,000 square feet of outdoor space.
The residence is on the fourth and fifth floors of the five-story Granite Park Place development, where units sell from $800,000 to $2 million. The Cushmans’ purchase price was not available.
Doors that open to the deck let the breeze come through the fifth-floor office of the condominium.
“It has the newest technology,” Cushman said. “The stuff I never had in any house I’ve owned. It’s kind of fun.
“I’ve been in Pasadena a long time but never lived anywhere more than two stories high. This is a new experience for me.”
Views from the condo include vistas of Mt. Baldy and Mt. Wilson. “On a clear day you can see every rock on the mountain,” he said.
The Cushmans split their time between coasts and decided that, with their children grown and out of the house, it was time for what he called “this exciting new maneuver.”
In terms of interiors, the couple has gone from traditional to contemporary.
“The best part of it is I have this extraordinary deck,” he said.
Amenities and services include a full-time concierge, 24-hour staffing, a fitness center and a swimming pool with spa.
Cushman is chairman of the international real estate brokerage Cushman & Wakefield.
Paul Sunshine of Domineum handled the transaction.
Beach home of stars’ negotiator
A beach house owned by the late entertainment lawyer Harold Berkowitz is on the market in Malibu at $13.9 million.
The Mediterranean house has 40 feet of beachfront and a raised deck for taking in the ocean views. The master bedroom suite includes a sitting area, a fireplace and dual bathrooms. Two detached guesthouses have kitchenettes and boost the listing to a total of five bedrooms and 61/2 bathrooms.
Berkowitz, who died last year at age 92, was known for his negotiation skills. Among his clients were director Blake Edwards and actors Jack Lemmon and Robert Mitchum.
Jack Pritchett of Pritchett-Rapf & Associates and Christopher Cortazzo of Coldwell Banker, Malibu West, are the listing agents.
Off the blocks in Orange County
Update: Motorcycle manufacturer and reality show star Jesse James, the ex-husband of actress Sandra Bullock, has sold his Sunset Beach home for $4.5 million.
The Mediterranean sits along the sand in Orange County on a corner lot with ocean views. The great room features stone floors, coved ceilings and an oversized fireplace with a stone surround and mantel. A crescent-shaped island with bar seating separates the living and dining areas from the kitchen. A master suite, a media/game room, a wet bar, an office and a guest suite complete the second floor.
The villa has a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms, plus a powder room, in 3,600 square feet.
A glass-enclosed lanai with a swimming pool, a grotto, a waterfall, a waterslide and automated tiki torches overlooks the beach.
The three-car garage has built-in tool storage and workshop space. Security includes video and audio systems.
James bought the property in 2002 for $3.6 million. He and Bullock had lived in the home since their 2005 wedding. They divorced last year.
Bullock, 46, won the Academy Award for lead actress last year for “The Blind Side.” James, 41, has tried his hand at custom motorcycle and auto making. He competed on “Celebrity Apprentice” (2009) and hosted the cable series “Monster Garage” (2003-06).
Chuck Buscemi of First Team Real Estate, Huntington Beach, was the listing agent. Joel Spencer of the same office represented the buyer.
