Muhammad Ali and Prince among the iconic images in AIDS monument photo auction
Iconic photographs donated by artists from around the world will comprise Photo16, the second annual auction to benefit the forthcoming AIDS Monument in West Hollywood.
The live and silent auction, scheduled for Oct. 6 at Milk Studios, will feature more than 90 images, including donations from the estate of Elizabeth Taylor.
Among the auction highlights: images of Prince, Muhammad Ali, shown above, Beyoncé and Robert Mapplethorpe as well as works by noted artists Bruce Weber, Ed Ruscha and Herb Ritts.
A rare portrait of David Bowie from 2001 by Markus Klinko, shown below, will make its debut at the auction along with a Paul Zone photograph of Lance Loud, who died of complications from hepatitis C at age 50 in 2001.
All proceeds will benefit the public art installation — part of West Hollywood’s $86-million overhaul of a public park on San Vicente Boulevard — created to memorialize the AIDS crisis and honor those affected by the disease. Drafted by Australian designer Daniel Tobin of Urban Art Projects, the monument will allow visitors to upload memorials, including stories, videos and images of loved ones as well as serve as a resource for HIV/AIDS awareness.
The event takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 6, and online bidding is already available at Paddle8. General admission tickets start at $150.
