Designers House at HD Buttercup carves out six boutiques

New York interior designer Celerie Kemble felt right at home at the recent opening party for Designers House at HD Buttercup in L.A.’s historic Helms Bakery building.

“Here the designer gets to put together the things we’ve labored for years to create,” said Kemble, who selected furniture and accessories from her Henredon and Maitland Smith collections to decorate her signature space. “This is how I would put together a room for myself or one of my clients.”

Designers House launched simultaneously as a Los Angeles retail space and as a website selling high-end, limited-quantity home furnishings from well-known interior designers. The 3,000-square-foot Los Angeles showcase features rooms, or boutiques, from six designers: Kemble, Jeffrey Alan Marks, Suzanne Kasler, Aerin Lauder, Thom Filicia and Mr. and Mrs. Howard.

“It’s a ‘clicks-and-mortar’ business,” said co-founder Keith Granet, a licensing agent and author of “The Business of Design.” Granet hopes to follow up the L.A. opening with Designers House boutiques at HD Buttercup in San Francisco, followed by locations in New York and London.

Set amid HD Buttercup’s sea of sofas and dining sets, the Designers House rooms have a calm, collected look, touching on many fashionable decor styles. (Sticker shock alert: Many of the products are handmade in the U.S. and priced accordingly.)

Mr. and Mrs. Howard offers a relaxed traditionalism, Kasler mixes classicism and modernism, Filicia’s collection is urban, and Marks’ has a beach vibe. Aerin Lauder’s gilded room speaks with a midcentury French accent, and Kemble’s blazing orange-red salon blends swank upholstery and furniture clad in leather, brass, faux bamboo and gemstones.
