Quirky Crates premiere in time for back-to-school

Quirky, the online design forum that invites would-be inventors to propose ideas for possible production, has released a new back-to-school storage solution that is a mod, modular take on milk crates.

Designed by Jenny Drinkard, a 25-year-old design student from Atlanta, the crates allow you to build bookshelves, consoles, laundry baskets and more by linking the crates together, stacking them or leaving them solo. Ten accessories include metal casters for mobility, drawers and shelves to keep things organized, and a cord clip and hook to manage cables and stow keys and headphones. Cork board and dry-erase panels can be added to the side of the cubes, and a cushion top transforms the crate into a stool. One pleasant surprise: The product is made in Vermont.

Crates are $20 apiece, and accessories are $5 to $30. They’re available through Quirky, OfficeMax online and also at some Target stores, including the L.A. store on La Cienega Boulevard.
