Do you know these people? Their selfies were taken with stolen Kindle, police say
Detectives called it a “crime of opportunity.”
On the day before Ash Wednesday, the Kindle was snatched from an unlocked car in a Jack-in-the-Box parking lot.
A few days later, selfies of two people appeared in the online photo account linked to the device.
“The Ash Wednesday part is important, because you can see the woman in the picture has ashes on her forehead, which tells us the pictures were taken the day after the theft,” Los Angeles police Det. Mark Pearce said in a statement.
The theft occurred about 3:45 p.m. at the fast-food restaurant in the 16800 block of Vanowen Street in Lake Balboa, police said.
Officials suspect the device automatically uploaded the photos once it was connected to the Internet. Since the Feb. 9 theft, the device has been tracked to several locations across the San Fernando Valley, but investigators have not located the two people.
The man and woman shown in the photos are not considered suspects. Investigators say they only want to identify the pair, and have asked them to return the Kindle.
Anyone with information about the people shown in the photographs is asked to call Det. Mark Pearce at (818) 374-7753. Those who wish to provide information anonymously may call Crimestoppers at (800) 222-8477.
