Thomas Menino dies: Sharing memories of Boston’s longest-serving mayor

Thomas Menino, Boston's longest serving mayor, died Thursday at age 71.

In a statement his office said, "At just after 9 a.m. this morning the Honorable Thomas M. Menino passed into eternal rest after a courageous batter with cancer. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, Angela, loving family and friends."

Politicians, athletes and citizens of Boston quickly took to social media to share their reactions to the passing of the mayor, who was said to have personally met 57% of Boston's citizens.

Secretary of State John Kerry said in a tweet, "Tom Menino was #Boston. He always will be."

Tim Alben, colonel superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, tweeted, "On behalf of @MassStatePolice - Our condolences to the Menino Family and the residents of Boston on the passing of Mayor Thomas Menino."
