Findery lets you leave your mark

From the co-founder of Flickr comes a new travel app that’s three parts photo-inspired sticky notes and one part treasure map.

What it does: Geo-tags “notes” all over the world connecting people with places, and places with stories. Create your own “notemaps,” or list of notes. Even better — discover the world through other travelers’ lists.

What’s hot: Lots of hyper-local travel apps point out brag-worthy hotspots, but Findery delves deeper, encouraging travelers and locals to imprint their memories and stories on a place. I loved searching for a destination and not knowing what I was going to find — a piece of history, a personal anecdote, etc. If you want to devour all the content for one region instead of clicking pin by pin on a map, type your destination in the search bar and then click on “Notes matching ‘Peru’ ” and you can scroll through quickly. I found a tiny Peruvian beach town called Mejía that the locals of Arequipa frequent. The traveler (@tjh) from Pleasanton, Calif., couldn’t wait to get back. When I searched for stories about the Taj Mahal I discovered one I didn’t expect — a traveler’s encounter with the security requirement of having to remove all electronic devices except for your camera.

What’s not: Don’t forget to scroll right to left for more content. It felt counterintuitive to me, but that’s small potatoes once you get the hang of it. When searching for destinations, look for green dots as well as profile pics. It might look like as if there are only a few markers in a place, but zoom in on the map and you’ll see the green dots reveal many more.

Worth it? Absolutely. Not only is it completely addictive, but everyone is or will be talking about it.
