Amber Alert: Authorities eye Mexico border as search continues
Responding to a statewide Amber Alert on Wednesday, authorities along the U.S.-Mexico border were watching for the sport utility vehicle belonging to a man believed to have abducted a Bay Area infant.
Possible sightings of the SUV -- described as a tan 2004 GMC Envoy with the license plate number 6HIL892 -- have been reported in San Diego. Authorities were searching for 2-week-old Henry Guler-Romero, who was allegedly taken Tuesday by his father, 22-year-old Mesut Guler of Sunnyvale.
Sunnyvale police Tuesday night were able to “ping” Guler’s cellphone, which showed his location as being in the San Diego area on the 805 Freeway between Balboa Avenue and California 163, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP Officer Mary Bailey said authorities had received many calls about possible sightings, but none had included the correct mix of plate number, vehicle description and other factors.
Bailey said that as of 9:26 a.m., Guler’s plate had not crossed the border.
Guler allegedly told the infant’s mother that he was leaving the state with the child after an argument Tuesday afternoon, according to Sunnyvale police. Guler “has made previous threats to harm himself and the baby,” police added in a statement.
The SUV has an image of a large American eagle on its rear window.
Authorities urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of Guler or the baby to contact the Sunnyvale Police Department at (408) 730-7110 or to call 911.
