6-year-old girl escapes alleged abduction attempt in Arcadia park
A man was in custody Monday after he allegedly tried to abduct a 6-year-old girl from a park in Arcadia, officials said Monday.
The girl was playing in a picnic area Sunday when a man, described as a transient, dragged her about 100 feet, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau said in a statement.
The girl managed to free herself, according to the statement.
“She screamed and yelled and fought to get away,” said Deputy Johnie Jones.
The girl ran to her mother, who called authorities.
Jason Dell, 33, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and held in lieu of bail set at $400,000, officials said. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
The sheriff’s department in conjunction with the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation hosts programs to help educate young children on how to respond to abduction attempts.
“I think she handled it great,” Jones said. “You want to make a scene so people look, and you get people’s attention.”
