Man fatally shot after getting into a patrol vehicle, driving toward a sheriff’s deputy
A man was shot and killed late Tuesday in East Los Angeles after he got into a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle and drove toward a deputy, authorities said.
No deputies were injured in the incident, which occurred about 10 p.m. near the 5000 block of East 3rd Street, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies were responding to reports of a man looking inside vehicles in an apartment complex’s parking structure.
The man appeared to hide from the deputies as they approached him, and then he ran past them toward their patrol vehicle, the department said in a statement.
One deputy fired a Taser at the man but it was ineffective. The man then got in the patrol vehicle, put it in drive and drove toward a second deputy.
It’s unclear whether both deputies fired their weapons, but the man was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The shooting comes two days after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies in South Los Angeles during a foot chase.
