Family of slain Dodgers fan plans statement, plea for help

Family members mourning a Dodgers fan who was fatally stabbed Wednesday in San Francisco plan to make a statement Sunday in front of AT&T; Park.

The family of Jonathan Denver will also pass out fliers that include information about an account the family has set up for donors to help with memorial expenses and about who Denver was as a person, a friend of the family told the Los Angeles Times.

The Associated Press reported Saturday that the victim’s father, Robert Preece, would call for witnesses to come forward, citing Preece’s sister Jill Preece Haro.

The planned statement comes after prosecutors said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Michael Montgomery, one of two men held for questioning after the killing near AT&T; Park in San Francisco.

In a statement Friday, San Francisco Dist. Atty. George Gascon said his office had to “prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in lawful self-defense.” Montgomery was released from county jail late Friday.

Denver, 24, was stabbed during a fight with a group of Giants fans after a Dodgers-Giants game, police said. He was wearing Dodgers apparel.

The stabbing recalls an earlier outbreak of violence in the longtime rivalry between the two teams. Two years ago, Giants fan Bryan Stow was brutally beaten at Dodger Stadium, causing severe brain trauma. His family called Denver’s killing “senseless.”
