Suspected drunk driver going wrong way held in fatal 134 Freeway crash
A suspected drunk driver drove the wrong way on the 134 Freeway in Eagle Rock early Sunday and collided head-on with another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction crash that left one man dead and a second badly hurt, authorities said.
The two male victims from San Fernando, ages 53 and 20, were hit by a third car shortly after midnight as they stood beside the wreckage of the initial collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was unclear whether they had been in the car that was struck by the suspect’s vehicle.
The 53-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 20-year-old man was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital with major injuries, the CHP said. Their names were not released.
The driver of the third car and two passengers, all residents of Panorama City, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP. They ranged in age from 59 to 69 and were not named.
The man arrested on suspicion of drunk driving is a 60-year-old Duarte resident. His name was also withheld.
An investigation was continuing.
