Explosives found in underground bunker; father, 2 sons arrested

A father and his two adult sons were arrested over the weekend after authorities discovered a “large amount” of explosives in an underground bunker on their Riverside County property.

Bruce Borynack, 49, Zachariah Borynack, 25, and Zephaniah Borynack, 23, were arrested Sunday at a house in the 10000 block of Nancy Avenue in Cherry Valley after authorities served a search warrant on the property and discovered the bunker, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Two unidentified people who were at the house when the warrant was served set off a brief SWAT standoff when they initially refused to come out, officials said.

The Borynacks were charged with 14 counts of “reckless or malicious possession” of destructive devices or explosives, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The department did not elaborate on the type of munitions stored in the underground bunker, saying only that there was “a large amount.” Due to the size of the cache, the department said, FBI and Air Force hazardous materials experts were called in to assist in the investigation.

Multiple explosives were also discovered in the vehicle Bruce and Zachariah Borynack were driving when they were stopped in the city of Beaumont prior to the property search, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Authorities secured the vehicle using a robotic device.
