Woman, stabbed more than 30 times, clings to life; attacker killed
Police shot a knife-wielding man to death in the Northern California city of Fairfield after authorities say he stabbed a woman more than 30 times then tried to attack responding officers.
Deonte Traylor, 24, was pronounced dead Tuesday evening at a hospital after being shot during a struggle with police trying to arrest him, Fairfield police said.
The incident began about 9:30 a.m. when police went to an apartment complex after a disturbance call. Officers found a woman stabbed more than 30 times and clinging to life.
She was rushed to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
While officers tended to the woman, a description of the suspect went out over the radio and Traylor was spotted nearby within minutes, police said.
When officers spotted Traylor, he ran and was still carrying a knife, police said. He was shot when he fought with police, officials said in a statement.
Police said Traylor and the victim had a past relationship and that he had a lengthy criminal history. He was on parole for robbery, officials said.
The Solano County district attorney’s office and Fairfield police will investigate Traylor’s shooting and the officers involved have been put on administrative leave – all standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
The shooting closed a stretch of California 12 for several hours Tuesday. Farfield is about halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento.
