Four dead after car runs red light and shears pole in San Diego
Four people were killed early Sunday when the driver of a car ran a red light and smashed into a van in the community of Palm City, San Diego police said.
The Acura was southbound on Industrial Boulevard when it sped through the light at Main Street and struck a Honda Odyssey that was headed west about 2 a.m., San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick said. The car careened into a traffic pole and was sheared in half.

Three people were ejected from the silver car and died, Battrick said. A fourth person inside was killed and a passenger was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two of the five people in the van that was struck suffered minor injuries.
“In order for it to collide with the van and still be severed in half like that after it hits the light standard, it’s traveling at a pretty good speed,” said San Diego police Lt. Leonard Flake to reporters. “It’s a speed that’s well above what would be appropriate for this area.”
Flake said the car involved was registered to an owner in San Diego. None of the occupants were identified.
It was not immediately known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
