Woman critically injured in Hawthorne police car crash
A woman involved in a car crash with a Hawthorne police officer Wednesday morning is in critical condition, authorities said.
The woman was injured when her blue Honda Accord collided with a Hawthorne police cruiser about 2 a.m. as the cruiser responded to a call and the Accord pulled out of an alley onto West El Segundo Boulevard.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating.
The force of the collision ejected the woman from her vehicle, which came to a rest on the westbound side of the street along with the cruiser. The Hawthorne officer suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital, CHP Officer Jose Barrios said.
“We don’t know who struck who first,” he said.
It was not immediately clear if the police cruiser’s lights and sirens were on.
The crash occurred in the 3700 block of West El Segundo Boulevard between Doty and Kornblum avenues in front of the Hawthorne DMV. That stretch of road was closed for several hours Wednesday before being reopened.
