Homicide detectives are leading the investigation into a fatal early morning fire at a Canoga Park apartment complex after the victim was discovered to have possible stab wounds, officials said.

Firefighters were called to an apartment in the two-story complex in the 14000 block of Saticoy Street shortly after 5 a.m., LAFD spokesman Eric Scott said. The flames were “quickly extinguished,” Scott said, but one person was found dead inside.

There were indications the victim had possibly been stabbed, said Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera. Homicide detectives were called to the scene and began their investigation.

There was no immediate information available about the victim. Herrera said detectives had identified a suspect but that the person was not in custody.

Scott said arson investigators were looking into the cause of the blaze, but said the Los Angeles Police Department had taken the lead in the investigation.
