Crews battle massive 3-alarm fire at Huntington Park dollar store

Los Angeles County firefighters spent hours fighting a three-alarm commercial fire that spread to a neighboring business in Huntington Park early Wednesday.

The fire engulfed a dollar store and spread to a next-door business full of electronics, then began to spew plumes of toxic smoke, fire department spokesman Randall Wright told local media. A hazmat crew was on the scene.

Crews posted updates on Twitter throughout Wednesday morning.

The blaze was reported about 3:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of East 57th Street, said supervising fire dispatcher Eddie Pickett.

Within 10 minutes of the first firefighters arriving, a second-alarm was called. A third-alarm was triggered less than an hour later, about 4:20 a.m., Pickett said.

“From the very beginning we went to defensive mode,” Pickett said.

More than 120 firefighters were at the scene, he said.

There have been no reported injuries, and the investigation into what sparked the blaze will begin after the fire is out. The building was still burning as of 6 a.m.
