L.A. Votes: Angelenos head to polls amid apathy, record spending
Los Angeles voters head to the polls today after record-breaking spending on a crush of campaign advertisements and mailers, as well as a torrent of appeals and attacks.
Despite the tens of millions of dollars spent on the mayor’s race, pundits expect dismal voter turnout. A Times analysis of the electorate shows that city races are likely to be decided by an electorate that is older and whiter than the city’s population.

In the final hours before voters headed to the polls, mayoral candidates Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti skittered around the city pressing the flesh, kissing babies and making their closing pitch to voters, starting at dawn Monday greeting longshoremen and commuters, and not finishing until well after sunset.
As undecided Angelinos decide how to cast their ballots, The Times posted the candidates’ answers to voters’ questions about schools, sidewalks, the economy and homelessness.
If nothing else inspires you to vote, the tale of two precocious 12-year-olds who are passionate about politics and actively taking part in the campaign should.
