Arson investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Friday that swept through several vehicles and left a man with third-degree burns to his body.

The fire was reported about 6:23 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Washington Boulevard in the University Park neighborhood under the 110 Freeway, said Erik Scott, a spokesman of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Photographs from the blaze showed flames and a black cloud of smoke over the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

Firefighters arrived to discover several vehicles on fire near a homeless encampment.

The flames were quickly extinguished, but a 35-year-old man suffered severe burns to part of his right leg.

The man was in serious condition and taken to an area hospital, Scott said.
