Man charged with trying to kill 2 L.A. sheriff’s deputies at Santa Monica Metro station
A 31-year-old man was charged Wednesday with trying to kill two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were patrolling a Metro station in Santa Monica, authorities said.
Thomas Napack, 31, faces two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer. If convicted, he faces up to life in state prison, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Prosecutors allege that Napack carried a knife in each hand when, shortly before 1 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Metro’s new Expo Line station at 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, he charged at two deputies.
During the encounter, one of the deputies shot and wounded Napack.
An attorney for Napack could not be reached for comment.
Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Katz said that before the shooting, a deputy grabbed Napack’s arm to try to gain control of one of the knives. Napack then brandished the second knife at the other deputy, Katz said.
The second deputy fired a weapon, striking Napack once in the upper torso, Katz said.
Prosecutors said Napack is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at the Airport Courthouse. His bail is expected to be set about $2 million.
