Boat of missing man is found, empty, in waters near La Jolla
The Coast Guard on Tuesday found an empty boat belonging to a man reported missing Monday off the coast of Oceanside. Authorities say he could be at sea wearing a life jacket.
The man’s 21-foot fishing boat, the Lucky Dog, was found at 6:26 a.m. about 10 miles northwest of La Jolla, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Gawrelli.
“We still have not found the missing man,” she said late Tuesday morning.
The man, whose name the Coast Guard has not released was reported missing at about 5:30 p.m. Monday by his wife, officials said. She had been contacted by a beachgoer who found the couple’s dog on the beach north of Oceanside pier. The couple’s phone number was on the dog’s collar.
His boat was found “moving very slowly in circles” Tuesday morning, Gawrelli said. A crew boarded the vessel and determined that there were no signs of distress and that the man was possibly wearing a life jacket, Gawrelli said.
The search is continuing by helicopter and boat.
