Lockdown lifted at South L.A. school; student had reported a man with gun

A lockdown following a report of a man with a gun at a South L.A. middle school has been lifted late Monday afternoon, officials said.

Los Angeles police descended on John Muir Middle School on Monday afternoon after a student called 911 and told police that a man with a gun hopped over a fence near the school on Vermont Avenue around 1:43 p.m., according to Officer Mike Lopez, an LAPD spokesman.

As of 3 p.m., the lockdown had been lifted after a police search failed to turn up a suspect or weapons, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
