Shipping container falls off big rig and crushes bicyclist
A man riding his bicycle was crushed to death Tuesday when a shipping container fell off a big rig after it went under a railroad bridge, authorities said.
At about 5 p.m., the truck was traveling down Santa Fe Avenue near Warnock Way, near Carson’s border with Long Beach, when the container “somehow became disengaged” and fell on top of the bicyclist, said Lt. Arthur Escamillas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, said Melanie Flores, a dispatcher with the Los Angeles County fire department.
She said the truck struck the railroad bridge, pushing the container off.
The identity of the man was not released. The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s department, Escamillas said.
