Drive-by shooting leads to deadly South L.A. crash
A black Dodge Charger that triggered a deadly eight-car crash in South Los Angeles was chasing a silver Pontiac involved in a shooting moments earlier, police said Wednesday.
Investigators recovered a gun from the Pontiac involved in the fiery collision Tuesday night at Broadway and West Manchester Avenue that left one person dead.
The two cars were speeding south in the northbound lanes of Broadway when they ran a red light at Manchester and slammed into cross traffic, said Sgt. Ruben Vega of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The Pontiac hit a Saturn driving east on Manchester. The Saturn driver, who would have turned 40 years old Wednesday, died at the scene.
The Pontiac’s driver and an unknown number of passengers ran off, Vega said. They are considered suspects in a drive-by shooting at a fundraiser at West 79th and South Hoover streets that occurred minutes earlier.
The Charger slammed into a westbound pickup truck, which then hit two other parked cars and a man on a bicycle. The Charger driver was listed in critical condition Wednesday morning at a hospital.
At least two other cars were hit in the chain-reaction crash.
Police said one of the Charger’s passengers ran off but was caught by police and interviewed. Vega said the driver and passenger in the Charger may have been chasing the Pontiac after the shooting on Hoover.
Everyone else involved in the crash suffered minor injuries or was treated at the hospital and released, police said.
