Gusty winds forecast for Thursday to create ‘extreme’ fire danger
The National Weather Service is predicting strong Santa Ana winds “with the potential for extreme fire danger” in Southern California over the next couple of days.
An alert posted Wednesday on the website for the weather service’s Oxnard office said the winds are expected to start late Thursday and last through Saturday.
The strongest winds, according to the weather service, will be between 45 mph and 55 mph in the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
As surface high pressure builds into the Great Basin, the winds are expected to increase, peaking in strength on Friday and Saturday, according to the weather alert.
Combined with very low humidity and warm temperatures, the winds will produce “critical fire weather conditions,” the weather service added.
The gusty winds are expected to diminish Sunday.
