Video shows girl, 14, struck by two vehicles in Santa Ana roadway

A man who authorities say was driving one of two vehicles that struck a 14-year-old girl in Santa Ana before driving off is due in court Wednesday to face felony hit-and-run charges.

Police said Adan Camacho, 32, was behind the wheel of a truck that struck the unidentified girl when she ran into traffic against the light at about 4:10 p.m. Monday on her way to Santa Ana College at 17th and Bristol streets. Police said they are continuing to search for the driver of a second car, possibly a black Cadillac, that struck the girl.

The incident was caught on surveillance video that was released by the Santa Ana Police Department.

“Had both drivers stayed at the scene, this would have been the 14-year-old’s fault,” Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KTLA-TV, noting that the girl “jetted out in front” of the vehicles. “She was responsible for what happened.”

The video shows the girl trying to get up, but her knee buckles and she falls in the roadway.

The truck stopped about 100 yards away, but then Camacho returned to the vehicle and drove away, Bertagna said.

Camacho was later arrested after a witness followed him from the scene and called police. He was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving without a valid license.

As shown in the surveillance video, the driver of the second vehicle that hit the girl stopped to check on her.

“She actually picks up the victim’s backpack and appears to be looking into her care, and then, for whatever reason, she gets back into her car and leaves the scene without identifying herself as being involved in the accident,” Bertagna said. “We’re hoping ... she’ll come forward and we can straighten this out.”

The girl was released from the hospital Tuesday after receiving treatment for leg injuries, police said.
