‘Manhunt over’: Arrest made in shooting of West Covina police officer after weeklong search
A man who was on the run after a West Covina police officer’s shooting was taken into custody Thursday, a day after a $20,000 reward was offered for his arrest, officials said.
Jose Luis Chavez, 47, was arrested about 2:06 a.m. in a home in the 1200 block of Foxworth Avenue in La Puente, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives believed he was hiding in the home.
“Manhunt is over,” the West Covina Police Department tweeted Thursday. “Suspect taken into custody this morning.”

Authorities on Wednesday had announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to Chavez’s arrest and conviction.
The West Covina police officer was shot in the chest Friday during a gun battle. Chavez will be taken to a hospital and examined for any injuries.
Sheriff’s officials said Chavez was riding a bicycle on North Yaleton Avenue near Badillo Street at 11:18 p.m. Friday when the on-duty officer approached him. The officer tried to detain him and a gun battle ensued, deputies said, with numerous rounds fired at the officer.
The officer was released from the hospital Sunday and is recovering at home.
Using helicopters, the Sheriff’s Department and West Covina police searched for Chavez during the weekend, but were unable to find him.
