Lucky Bay Area scores another lottery win in Powerball drawing

The winning $425-million Powerball ticket sold in Milpitas is the latest big lottery payout to strike the Bay Area, which also claimed one of two winning tickets nationwide for the near-record-setting Mega Millions in December.

In December, a Northern California man was one of two winners nationwide for the $648-million jackpot after purchasing his ticket at a gift shop in San Jose. The jackpot was the second-largest in U.S. history.

The winning ticket holder for the Powerball jackpot had yet to come forward Thursday morning, but the beneficiary of the sale was already known.

The Dixon Landing Chevron gas station will receive $1 million for selling the ticket with all six winning numbers, California Lottery spokesman Alex Traversol said after Wednesday night’s drawing.

The Powerball jackpot on Wednesday was the sixth-largest in U.S. lottery history, and the odds of winning it were about 1 in 175 million, officials said.

Two other ticket-holders matched five out of the six for Wednesday’s draw, “so they’re going to get a big, nice fat check,” Russ Lopez of the California Lottery told ABC Bay Area.
