Atty. Gen. Harris announces trip to Mexico to address gang issue
SACRAMENTO -- Atty. Gen. Kamala D. Harris announced Wednesday that she will lead a delegation of state attorneys general to Mexico this spring to address issues surrounding transnational gangs.
Harris, appearing at a California Newspaper Publishers Assn. conference, said she and other attorneys general from border states will meet with their Mexican counterparts to discuss trafficking, cybersecurity and piracy concerns.
She said the trip signaled a push for “collaboration and communication and sharing of information to be more efficient with often restricted resources.”
In her remarks to the publishers, she called on government to work “in the way that the private sector does,” with an emphasis on gathering and analyzing data, and using technology.
“When you pull back the curtain on the way that government works, sometimes it makes me think of that little guy in the Wizard of Oz,” Harris said. “It’s amazing that anything is getting done.”
Later, in a Q&A with Times Editor-at-Large Jim Newton, Harris passed up a chance to gloat about her chances for reelection.
“I’m superstitious. I really am” she said. “Let’s have this conversation after March 7,” the deadline for candidates to enter the race.
Orly Taitz, an Orange County attorney and dentist, has filed paperwork to run for the attorney general post, with no specified party affiliation.
Taitz has found notoriety as a “birther” conspiracy theorist, who believes President Obama was not born in the United States and therefore is not eligible for the presidency.
