More Penn State turmoil: Former athletics director is gone, too

Mark Sherburne, who briefly served as athletics director at Penn State after the disclosure of a child sexual abuse scandal connected to the university, no longer works at the school, officials said Friday.

The university would not disclose why Sherburne was no longer a Penn State employee, saying in an email that officials could not discuss personnel matters. The Centre Daily Times, which first reported Sherburne’s departure, said he was fired Wednesday.

Sherburne was a senior athletics official who stepped in for 10 days to head the department after the sexual abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky broke. Sherburne replaced Tim Curley, who was placed on administrative leave in November.

On Nov. 16, David Joyner was named interim athletics director and Sherburne returned to his position as associate athletic director.

Sandusky, accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period on the Penn State campus and elsewhere, is awaiting trial in June on more than 50 counts.

The scandal led to the ouster of iconic college football coach Joe Paterno, who died in January, and Penn State President Graham Spanier.
