Boy, 6, drowns on Carnival ship; cruise line doesn’t have lifeguards
There was no lifeguard on duty on the Carnival cruise ship on which a 6-year-old boy drowned on Sunday.
Qwentyn Hunter, of central Florida, drowned on the Carnival Victory as he played with his 10-year-old brother, the Miami Herald reported.
“We do not have lifeguards on duty at our pools,” Carnival spokeswoman Jayme Weber told the Los Angeles Times on Monday morning. “Parental supervision is required for children under 13.”
In this case, she said, “there was a parent present at the time of the incident.”
Qwentyn reportedly went under water and didn’t surface. He was pulled out of the pool by other passengers, who tried to revive him without success. The incident was believed to be an accident.
Carnival said in its statement: “Yesterday, Oct. 13, on board the Carnival Victory, while the ship was at sea on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise, a six-year-old boy drowned in the midship pool. He was at the pool area with other family members at the time.
“Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company’s CareTeam is providing assistance and support.”
