Police shoot man after chase inside Milwaukee children’s hospital

A children’s hospital in Milwaukee was put on lockdown Thursday after an attempted arrest inside of the hospital’s neonatal unit resulted in gunshots, officials said.

Milwaukee Police Department officers had entered Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to serve a felony weapons warrant on a man who was holding a newborn inside the neonatal unit on the hospital’s seventh floor, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke told reporters.

The man put down the baby and made a run for it in the hospital, Clarke said in a televised news conference.

Clarke said the man pulled out a weapon and pointed it at officers, and police then shot the man. He said he did not know the man’s condition.

Clarke said the baby and the baby’s mother were unhurt, but the sheriff didn’t know their relationship to the man.

“This is not a situation where a guy came here with a gun looking to shoot somebody,” Clarke said.

Other medical facilities around the hospital were locked down and have since been reopened, according to WISN-TV, which reported that the children’s hospital itself remained locked down until investigators gave the all-clear.
