Police shoot teen after knife scuffle at Hawaii high school
At least one young person was hurt after an officer-involved shooting at a high school in Honolulu on Tuesday morning, according to Honolulu police.
A spokesman for the Honolulu Police Department told reporters three officers went to Roosevelt High School after a 17-year-old runaway showed up at the school.
After police encountered the young man in a school office, he “became combative” and struck two of the officers, the spokesman said.
The 17-year-old pulled out a knife and “began slashing” the officers, the spokesman said. An officer fired two shots at the boy before subduing him.
Three officers received minor injuries.
Emergency Medical Services Division told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser a 17-year-old boy was shot in the wrist and was taken to the local hospital.
KHON-TV reported the head of the local police union was at the scene after the incident.
Parents and relatives flocked to Roosevelt High School after the school went into lockdown.
“I cannot not be here. This is my child,” the parent of a 10th grader told KHON-TV.
Another woman who identified herself as the grandmother of a student told KHON-TV that “my grandson was texting me, telling me he loved me.”
The woman added, “I was fearful for him and the other children to have to experience something like that here in Hawaii.”
