Tracy Morgan crash 911 calls: ‘There’s a terrible accident’

The New Jersey State Police on Tuesday released a series of 911 calls from frazzled motorists who had witnessed the deadly crash that left comedian Tracy Morgan in critical condition over the weekend.

Morgan was in a limousine returning from a performance in Delaware when the vehicle was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer, police have said. The accident caused Morgan’s car to spin out and flip over, sparking a chain-reaction crash that killed 63-year-old James McNair, a comedian better known by his stage name, Jimmy Mack, and left Morgan and two others critically injured.

“There’s a terrible accident, the car flipped, it’s on its side,” said one woman after calling 911.

Morgan, Jeffrey Millea and Ardley Fuqua Jr. remained in critical condition Tuesday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, hospital spokesman Peter Haigney told The Times. None of them were expected to be released today, and Haigney declined to comment further.

In the four 911 calls, witnesses also reported that a Wal-Mart truck was involved in the crash.

Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga., who was driving the Wal-Mart tractor trailer that struck Morgan’s limousine, has been charged with death-by-auto and assault by auto in connection with the wreck.

He was released from custody in lieu of $50,000 on Saturday. A criminal complaint has suggested Roper was awake for more than 24 hours before the crash, and the state police previously said he had failed to notice slower traffic ahead of him.

Representatives for Morgan have said the “30 Rock” actor will remain hospitalized for several weeks.
