FBI searches Trenton City Hall, mayor’s house, brother’s house ...

FBI agents on Thursday raided City Hall in Trenton, N.J., as part of an investigation into corruption.

“We have executed search warrants on various offices pursuant to an ongoing investigation,” FBI spokeswoman Barbara Woodruff said in a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times. She would not give any details about the nature of the investigation.

Trenton Mayor Tony F. Mack, whose home was searched Wednesday by the FBI, defended himself.

“I have not violated my duties or the public trust and have no further comment on this matter,” Mack said in a statement posted on the city’s website.

Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, is a city of about 85,000 located almost in the center of the state. Mack, 46, has faced allegations of corruption, cronyism and mismanagement since he took office in 2010.

In addition to searching Mack’s home, officials also executed search warrants on the homes of his brother, Ralphiel, and a campaign donor, Joseph Giorgianni.

The mayor’s home and other properties have faced foreclosure, and last month he acknowledged that he, his brother and Giorgianni were late in making tax payments.

Among the scandals to plague the mayor has been the loss of a city business administrator who had to resign before pleading guilty to embezzlement at another job. The mayor was forced to agree to hire department heads from a state-approved list or face loss of aid.

A half-brother pleaded guilty this year to official misconduct for directing municipal crews to do private work with city equipment.
