Two Louisiana sheriff’s deputies killed in early morning shootout

Two Louisiana sheriff’s deputies have been shot and killed, and two other deputies were seriously wounded in an early morning shootout outside New Orleans.

Capt. Dane Clement of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths of the two deputies and told the media said that the other two deputies were undergoing surgery for their injuries, according to a video posted at Nola.com.

He declined to declined to discuss the circumstances leading up to the shooting, or whether arrests have been made, saying Sheriff Mike Tregre would address the media shortly.

But Nola.com quoted Trooper Melissa Matey, a state police spokeswoman, as saying two suspects are in custody and another is still being sought.

Multiple law enforcement agencies have joined in the hunt for the outstanding suspect.

The Associated Press reported that the shooting occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time in a parking lot used by workers in an area of manufacturing plants and refineries along the Mississippi River.

The gunfire occurred in LaPlace, a small community located along the east bank of the Mississippi, about 25 miles west of New Orleans.
